RECIPE: A warming turmeric, chia and berry oats bowl

Ah I am so excited to share this turmeric, chia and berry oats recipe with you!

This recipe was inspired by the turmeric porridge we were served up for breakfast whilst staying at The Sentinel in Kaslo, Canada a few weeks back. I asked them what they put in it, and then adapted it to what I could buy at home and what else I thought might work in it too – it’s so yummy!!!

Why not just normal porridge? Why all the fancy ingredients?

I’ve always been a fan of porridge in the mornings as it provides such a good source of fibre and always sets me up well for the day ahead (I don’t get hungry 30 minutes later) but I definitely go through phases and get bored if I have the same breakfast every day.

This turmeric, chia and berry oats recipe is flamboyant to say the least (particularly when you see the colour) but it also has the most popping of flavours and nutrients from the different berries and ingredients included.

You will notice that this recipe used steel cut oats (also known as pinhead oatmeal) but you can totally just use normal porridge oats if you wish!

Steel-cut oats are minimally processed compared to rolled oats and are one of the healthiest grains you can consume. Steel cut oats absorb less liquid during their cooking time, leaving them with a firmer texture and a slightly nutty taste.

How to cook the warming turmeric, chia and berry oats bowl:

THE most simple recipe…

1. In a cup (or straight into the pan) pop your oats, chia seeds, berries, turmeric, sweetener (plus nut milk and nut butter if you’re using).

Note: Don’t worry too much about exact proportions, I never measure it out. The worst that can happen is that there isn’t enough liquid in your mix when it’s cooking (just add water) or there’s too much liquid (drain it or add more oats / berries).

2. Boil the kettle. Once boiled cover the ingredients in the pan with hot water and turn the hob on. Leave it on a low simmer and cook slowly.

3. Mix every minute or so and add hot water / nut milk as necessary to get the right consistency.

8. Serve up your turmeric, chia and berry oats bowl and save some more for later if you get peckish!

Enjoy!
