Cwm Idwal walk photo diary, Snowdonia National Park, Wales

In Active Travel, United Kingdom, Wales, Weekend Getaways

What I saw in Wales last week blew my mind.

Really, really.

I was absolutely taken aback not only by the landscapes, but by the location of such landscapes. Honestly, I could have been in New Zealand. But no, this time I was in the beautiful Snowdonia National Park.

So often we overshadow the beauty in the UK. Admittedly I speak so fondly of other locations, but rarely of the ones on my doorstep.

I hope that after viewing this photo diary you will agree that the UK is so ridiculously underrated. I, for one, must take more time to explore it.

If you are keen to explore more of the UK, you can see my 2017 UK adventure bucket list here for inspiration.

Before I let the photo diary do the talking, here are a few notes for the hike, should you embark on the adventure {I highly recommend you do}.

Cwm Idwal walk

Where to park? Ogwen Cottage, Nant Ffrancon, Bethesda, LL57 3LZ

What to take? Packed lunch and enough water to last the walk! There are refreshments available at the car park {address above} but aside from that, it’s just you and the countryside.

Take your camera! The views are stunning; you’ll regret it if you don’t take it.

What to wear? Obviously it depends on the weather. Whether it’s rain or shine, I would definitely recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, a waterproof jacket {the weather in the UK is temperamental}, bottoms with flexibility {there are bits and bobs of scrambling if you ascend higher than the lake} and a supportive backpack to ensure the weight of your belongings is evenly distributed.

How long is the walk? The full walk is 4.8km and is estimated to take around 3 hours, but if that’s too much you can also just walk up to the lake and back without completing the full route. See more information about the hike here

Top tip: Watch out for the fighter jets that often practise flights through the mountains here. They are absolutely incredible to witness, but there’s never enough time to get your camera out!
