Tips for looking after your hair whilst travelling

As ideal as travelling the world may seem from the Instagram grid, there are most certainly consequences that one makes whilst doing so. As well as on relationships, your health, your body and your skin, life on the road really can take it’s toll on your hair too.

Weather can have horrendous effects on my hair. I can always notice the difference in the texture, colour and softness of my hair when i’m travelling through different temperatures and types of water.

I’m forever trying to find ways to combat it.

After having acne back in 2013 and being prescribed Isotretinoin (which meant my hair was starved of it’s natural oils and was breaking off near the root) my hair has become very important to me and space in my luggage for the right products and tools is something I will always prioritise.

For the last 3 months, since being an ambassador for Herbal Essences, I have had the company of the bio:renew range whilst travelling. Not only is my hair getting nourished and replenished but the products also fill my hair with a range of gorgeous scents that last all day long.

Have you guys tried any of the new Herbal Essences bio:renew range yet? Which is your favourite?

Mine is definitely the White Strawberry and Fresh Mint. I love being out and about when the wind catches my hair and I am re immersed in the aroma. The scent is a subtle but effective mood lifter.

You can check out the full range and the collections on offer here.

Note: Each product is free of colourants, parabens and gluten.

So what other hair care products do I take on the road with me to look after my locks and what tips do I have?

1. Use invisibobbles

I always make sure I have an invisibobble on my wrist and a few spare in my toiletries bag. These little bands are so great for tying up your hair and avoiding any additional damage from bobble breakage.

2. Tie hair up for activities that include wind

When sailing / on a boat / partaking in ziplines, bungees or similar, make sure your hair is tied back. Excessive wind exposure can completely matt your hair and cause serious damage when you try to brush it out. Tying it back not only avoids irritation during the activity but is an easy way to protect your hair.

3. Leave in some conditioner

If my hair is feeling particularly dry sometimes I will pop a drop of conditioner through the ends of my hair and leave it in during the day or overnight for some added moisture. If i’m going in and out of the sea I sometimes do this also, as it makes detangling my hair a lot easier. In Croatia I took my bio:renew Moringa Oil conditioner with me in my day bag for application prior to jumping in the ocean.

4. Cover your hair in the sun

There was a time when i’d literally fan my hair out on my sun lounger to give it maximum exposure it to the sun in order to achieve that sun kissed beachy look. There’s nothing more to say than that doing so is extremely damaging. Think of your hair just like you would your skin, it needs protecting. Wearing a cap or covering your hair with a pashmina when you’re sun bathing is a great shout.

5. Use a tangle teezer

I swear by them!

6. Have a fresh water shower before and after chlorine exposure

When immersing yourself in chlorinated water be sure to have a fresh water shower before. Rumour has it, if you do so your hair then absorbs less of the chlorinated matter. Shower afterwards too to remove residue and rinse your locks!
